A Message to the Youth from our Director of Youth Engagement, Joi K. Butler

Racial Consciousness Decision of the Supreme Court

On June 29, 2023, a life-changing educational decision was made regarding Race-Conscious Admissions (Affirmative Action) by the highest court of the Judicial Branch, the Supreme Court (SCOTUS). SCOTUS decided that educational institutions are not constitutionally bound to take race into consideration in the Admissions process. Youth, do your own research to be fully aware and knowledgeable of what this means, and to take this moment in history as a steppingstone towards change in your communities. The ruling presented another setback for college students like me who historically don’t have access to quality education and economic resources.

This is the reason why it’s important to vote and be aware of what the processes and laws are. Knowing how they can, and will, impact our communities should be discussed at every level so that rulings like this aren’t negatively affecting your future. ALL Youth are able to make a difference, not just in the communities they live in but in the world. For those who are 17+, make sure that you are registered to vote and ARE voting. And not just in the Presidential Elections, but in ALL the elections…especially the local elections. We are here…I am here, to help you in whatever you need and for you to be educated, equipped, and empowered!
